As a Filipino-American I would always get behind UFC Mixed Martial Arts fighter Brandon “The Truth” Vera similar to how I and many other Filipinos would get behind boxer Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao.
I remember when Vera first came on the scene he was exciting and shown a lot of potential, but all of a sudden instead of living up to his moniker “The Truth” he became more like “The Hype” losing a string of fights and having bad performances where he was scared to go in for the kill against opponents.
I am not being mean, I am simply stating “The Truth.” As a fight fan I don’t care if you lose as long as you gave it your all and shown heart in defeat, this is why I respect Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz a lot, even though he has been beat before he tries his hardest and really has the work ethic of a Manny Pacquiao and the heart and spirit of a Filipino Warrior. Vera on the other hand is all talk and no action, and it is disappointing because of how many Filipinos supported him after his many losses only to have him not even try in his fight with Silva.
After tonight it’s kind of hard to be a Brandon Vera fan. He didn’t do much at all in his fight against Thiago Silva at the UFC 125 Edgar vs. Maynard New Year’s day event. All Vera did was lay on his back trying to cover his face from getting pounded or curl in a ball while Silva rode his back like a cowboy, he never even tried to scramble once or look for an escape.
Brandon Vera used to liken himself as the MMA version of Manny Pacquiao. Vera was telling everyone how he comes to fight and how he would hold the UFC Heavyweight and Light-Heavyweight titles simultaneously — that he would beat Chuck Liddell and give MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko a run for his money and possibly beat him. After seeing the Photo of Brandon Vera’s broken nose I could only imagine what Fedor would do to him if he was on top of Vera.
I personally think Brandon Vera suffers from illusions of grandeur, comparing himself to Manny Pacquiao, making claims that he would hold two UFC belts at the same time, that he could defeat Fedor and smiling after his nose got rearranged by Thiago Silva, the man needs to get back in touch with reality. After that performance and other failed opportunities I wouldn’t blame UFC head honcho Dana White for releasing Brandon Vera, sad to say this, but I think many fans would actually applaud it.
