Teena Marie, the first white singer signed by Motown records, passed away on December 26, 2010 at the age of 54.
Marie also known as the ‘Ivory Queen of Soul’ and “Lady Tee,” was fully embraced by the African-American community despite being white. She was mentored by the late Rick James, with early hits such as “Square Biz,” Lovergirl,” and “Fire and Desire.”
The death was confirmed by her publicist, Jasmine Vega, who worked closely with Teena on her last studio album.
The cause of death is still unknown.
Teen Marie will always be remembered by fans for her powerful voice, warm personality and the songs she produced like “Need Your Lovin’,” “Behind the Groove” and “Ooh La La La.”
“May Gods Light always shine on you and your family! May you have the most joyous Holiday season ever! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!,” Teena Marie wished her fans on Twitter hours before she passed.
You will be missed Teena Marie
