The nominations for the 2011 Golden Globe Awards were announced early Tuesday morning December 14, 2010 and the list of nominees are star studded from Johnny Depp, to Angelina Jolie and a few snubs. The Gold Globes will be broadcast on NBC on Sunday, January 16, 2011 and comic actor Ricky Gervais is the host.
This year’s Golden Globes which honors the works of those in Film and Television seems more about ratings than deserving nominations. The ratings for the Golden Globes haven’t been all that great in recent years and many believe that is the reason why some films that were not considered great were nominated so they could bring in viewers who will tune in to see the big name stars.
Halle Berry got a nomination for her role in “Frankie and Alice” many critics felt she was over the top.
Burlesque and The Tourist got 6 nominations each, which was a shocker since there were no quality performances in either film and Depp and Jolie both great actors didn’t have any real comic or romantic chemistry in The Tourist, Burlesque which starred Christina Aguilera and Cher was obviously nominated for star power reasons.
One of the biggest snubs was the remake of the John Wayne classic “True Grit” which didn’t receive one single nomination for actors Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon or directors Joel and Ethan Coen, Damon and Bridges both delivered great performances but were surprisingly snubbed. Leonardo Dicaprio who delivered two powerful performances in “Inception” and “Shutter Island” wasn’t nominated. Hilary Swank didn’t get a nomination for “Conviction”. Gwyneth Paltrow was snubbed for her singing role in “Country Song” while a non funny and non musical Angelina Jolie got the nod for The Tourist instead.
The HBO vampire series “True Blood” failed to get nominated for best TV Drama this year but was replaced by “The Walking Dead” one of this years highly rated new TV series, but it seems like it is the dark horse and long shot to win even though only 6 episodes were made each episode captured the audience and kept viewers coming back for more. ABC series Lost wasn’t nominated but Glee and Boardwalk Empire dominated the TV nominations.
