Boxing congressman Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines delivered a virtuoso performance on November 13 when he defeated the much larger Antonio Margarito in a 12 round decision that left Margarito’s eyes swollen and his orbital bone broken.
On November 20, HBO rebroadcast the Pacquiao vs. Margarito bout in its entirety and followed it with a live main event between WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez vs. Paul Williams.
Those who tuned in to watch the replay of Pacquiao vs. Margarito and stayed around to watch the live championship boxing match that followed were in for a real treat when Sergio Martinez delivered a highlight knockout over Paul Williams in the second round of their rematch.
After the fight there were ramblings about Manny Pacquiao as a possible future opponent for Martinez, but Martinez and his manager Sampson Lewkowicz had no interest in fighting the smaller Filipino.
“Manny Pacquiao is too small. It would be a mismatch. I don’t believe that it will ever happen,” commented Martinez. “But a fight with Floyd Mayweather? Most likely, that would be a fight that we could make. He’s a great fighter, and I would love to do it.”
Martinez’s manager, Sampson Lewkowicz, added.
“Sergio would never fight Manny Pacquiao,” said Lewkowicz, “because Sergio would knock him [Pacquiao] out.”
