Three-time Tour De France Winner Alberto Contador of Spain tested positive for the steroid clenbuterol, a small concentration of anabolic steroid was found in his urine test July 21 during the Tour de France, and he blames the steak he ate as the culprit for his positive drug test.
Alberto Contador believes that the steak he brought from Spain to France and ate during a rest day was contaminated with the drug causing him to test positive.
The International Cycling Union (UCI) released a statement saying that the concentration level was 50 picograms per millilitre, which is 400 times lower than the minimum standards of detection capability required by World Anti-Doping Agency, and that further scientific investigation would be required in this case.
Renowned anti-doping doctor, Don Catlin, considers Alberto Contador’s explanation as very plausible, since it was a small amount found in his urine sample, and clenbuterol is sometimes given to cattle to increase their growth rate. In the past Spain has had health reports being linked to beef and veal contaminated with clenbuterol.
Clenbuterol is an anabolic steroid that helps build muscle while burning fat, many bodybuilders take the drug because it keeps them lean before a contest.
People associated with the sport of cycling said Contador would receive little benefit from using the clenbuteral, especially in the small amounts that were discovered in his urine sample.
