Popular singer Katy Perry’s duet of her hit song “Hot n Cold” with Elmo was removed From ‘Sesame Street’ because of her suggestive clothing most notably her cleavage showing, making the Katy and Elmo “Play Dress Up” segment inappropriate or suggestive by Sesame Street producers. Parents who saw the video of Perry and Elmo on YouTube, made complaints over it.
I personally don’t see what the big deal is. When I first heard the news about the video, I went to check it out on YouTube and was expecting some type of slutty, shocking outfit like something the attention craving Lady Gaga would wear. Instead, it was just Katy innocently singing along with Elmo. There wasn’t anything sexual about the outfit, maybe it was her cleavage that parents had a problem with. I can understand parents concerns but Katy Perry is tame compared to other artists like Lady Gaga or Britney Spears, who try to use shock gimmicks to gain publicity and remain in the public eye. I don’t think little kids even care about those things at the ages of 4 or 5 years old, but maybe they would try to imitate the outfit and start thinking it’s OK to dress that way? I just think the young kids watching Sesame Street would probably be more focused in singing along or dancing to the song by Katy Perry and Elmo, and not focused on the outfit or her cleavage.
The video was put up on YouTube but won’t be aired on Television. Here is the official statement released by Sesame Street producers:
“Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver. We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we’ve received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers. Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube.”
