Abbot Laboratories, the maker of popular powdered infant formula, Similac, announced Wednesday that they have issued a recall on 5 million cans of Similac because the presence of a small common beetle was detect in the the formula at their Sturgis, Michigan manufacturing facility.
The company has asked the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to assist in the recall. The FDA said the type of beetle that contaminated the Similac could irritate the gastrointestinal tract causing discomfort and lose of appetite in infants if ingested.
The recall is being issued for the USA, Puerto Rico, Guam and other countries in the Caribbean.
The Abbott liquid formula is not a part of the Similac recall, but certain types of Similac powder product lines are in the recall like the ones that come in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce, and 12.9-ounce cans.
Abbott Laboratories said that concerned parents and caregivers can go to www.similac.com/recall10 or call Abbott’s consumer hotline, (800) 986-8850, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for more information on the recall.
