Tonight the remake of the original hit series and classic, Hawaii Five-O will air, many fans who grew up watching the original and the younger generation, like myself, who watched the re-runs and fell in love with the original, feel this new version won’t live up to the standard set by the original.
Hawaii Five-O aired from 1968 to 1980 and had cool Jack Lord as Detective Steve McGarrett the head of a special Police unit in Hawaii, and his partner Danny “Danno” Williams played by James MacArthur, the two partners would arrest offenders and after every successful capture Detective Steve McGarrett would say, “Book ’em, Danno!” a phrase that remains popular today just like the original Hawaii Five-O theme song.
Actor Alex O’Loughlin will have big shoes to fill taking on the role of Steve McGarrett, made popular by Jack Lord. O’Loughlin probably knows how high the standard is for the role because of how iconic Jack Lord was in the role, but he signed on and will get some serious criticism by the fans.
I haven’t seen the debut episode yet, and I admit it will be difficult to remain unbiased, but being a fan of the original series I will try to be open minded. Regardless if I like the first episode or not, I think they should have done a Film remake instead of a TV series.
The new cast of Hawaii Five-O:
Alex O’Loughlin as Detective Steve McGarrett
Scott Caan as Detective Danny “Danno” Williams
Daniel Dae Kim as Detective Chin Ho Kelly
Grace Park as Detective Kona Kalakaua
Jean Smart as Governor Patricia “Pat” Jamenson
Taryn Manning as Mary Ann McGarrett.
The new “Hawaii Five-O” will air Monday at 10 p.m. on CBS.
