In a shocking freak injury on Sunday’s MLB game between the Chicago Cubs and the Florida Marlins, Cubs rookie outfielder Tyler Colvin was struck with the sharp end of a broken bat that punctured his chest and nearly collapsed his lung.
Colvin’s teammate Welington Castillo’s bat broke as he hit a double and a part of the bat flew towards Colvin as he was running toward home plate to scoreĀ and it punctured him right in the chest.
Colvin was in pain after he touched home plate and was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated with a chest tube to prevent his lung from collapsing.
The 25-year old Colvin was very grateful to the fans for their support and the doctors and medical staff who were able to take care of his wound. Colvin is out for the entire season due to the injury, but expects to make a full recovery and return for next season.
The Chicago Cubs won the game against the Florida Marlins 13 to 3.
