Rolando Mendoza a 55-year-old Filipino Police Captain, who was terminated from his job for robbery and extortion through the decision of the Ombudsman, hijacked a Philippine tourist bus with 13 tourists from Hong Kong on board, including 4 Filipinos, who survived the hijacking.
Originally, there were 25 people on board and out of this 8 were killed by Mendoza before he was killed by a Philippine sniper. Among the dead was the tourist guide Masa Tse, 31-years-old, who studied yoga and wanted to be an instructor.
The decision of the Ombudsman was considered by many as drastic, they believe that even though he was terminated from his job they shouldn’t have cut his pension or they could have agreed that they will reinstate him and after having been reinstated then that is the type they should modify or amend the Ombudsman decision. This procedure of negotiation during the stand-off could have saved lives.
Philippine President Benigno Aquino III is now facing a major crisis. This tragic hijacking will affect tourism and relations particularly those coming from Hong Kong.
Hong Kong canceled tours to the Philippines and advised that any Hong Kong tourists still in the Philippines should leave the country.
