Typhoon “Basyang” (international name: Conson) hit the island of Luzon yesterday, taking nine lives as of Wednesday afternoon and left more than 40 people missing according to the Philippines’ National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).
Typhoon Conson also caused major blackouts in Manila and left damages through out the city, the damage was so bad that power in certain parts of the area won’t be restored till Friday.
Hundreds of Filipino families moved to temporary shelters as flood waters engulfed their homes.
Philippine President Benigno Aquino III was critical of the weather bureau for not accurately presenting forecasts that could have given an earlier warning to prepare residents before the Typhoon landfall.
“That information is sorely lacking and we have had this problem for quite a long time, You do what you are supposed to do and this is not acceptable. I hope this is the last time that we are brought to areas different from where we should be,” Aquino told the weather bureau at the National Disaster Coordinating Council at the main army base in Manila.
Typhoon Conson is currently headed towards the China sea and expected to make another landfall on the Chinese mainland later in the week.
