Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III will be sworn in as the 15th president of the Philippines at noon on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 in Manila.
He is the son of the Philippines’ democracy heroes, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino and first female President Corazon Aquino, both have passed.
His father “Ninoy” Aquino was assassinated in 1983 at Manila airport as he returned to the Philippines from U.S. exile to lead the democracy movement against the corrupt Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
After his father “Ninoy” was shot dead his mother Corazon took over and led the “People Power” revolution that eventually overthrew the Marcos regime in 1986. Corazon Aquino became the first female Philippine president and was known as an incorruptible leader during her six-year term as RP president.
This is the first time a bachelor President will be in Malacañang Palace and it is also interesting to note that this is the first time a Philippine Vice President-elect, Jejomar “Jojo” Binay, will be riding a Jeepney instead of a limousine going to the Quirino Grandstand for oath taking.
Oprah Winfrey’s teen singing sensation, and proud Filipino, Charice Pempengco, will sing the Philippine national anthem “Lupang Hinirang” at the historic inauguration of President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III Wednesday afternoon.
Charice was chosen by Kris Aquino and her family to sing the national anthem for Noynoy’s inauguration. The other choice was lead singer or Journey, Arnel Pineda, but the Aquino family ultimately went with Charice.
Charice is also a new cast member of hit American TV series “Glee” and will fly out to Los Angeles in July to tape the second season of the popular series.
Philippine TV stations such as GMA, TFC and ABS-CBN will cover the inauguration and oath taking of Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino live. GMA will broadcast the event live in 3D.
