The pound-4-pound best MMA fighter in the world, Fedor “Last Emperor” Emelianenko, lost tonight in a shocking upset against Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter Fabricio Werdum at the June 26 Showtime Strikeforce event in San Jose, California.
In the first round Fedor and Werdum exchanged a flurry of punches and Fedor got the better of Werdum dropping him to the canvas. Once Fedor dropped Werdum he went in for the kill and tried to get a hammer fist stoppage but Fabricio Werdum recovered and was able to slap on a triangle choke causing Fedor to frantically try to wiggle out of the submission only to allow Werdum to lock the choke in deeper and combining it with an armbar forcing the once indestructible Russian known as the Last Emperor to tap.
UFC President Dana White was trying to sign Fedor Emelianenko to the UFC to face his UFC heavyweight champion, former WWE wrestler, Brock Lesnar, but Fedor’s management, M-1 global, couldn’t come to an agreement over contractual terms, so, Fedor signed with Scott Coker’s Strikeforce MMA organization instead.
The Russian champion was humble in defeat and kept his interview short stating that he made mistakes in the fight and will go over them with his team. Fabricio Werdum insisted Fedor is still the best fighter in the world and wants to give him a rematch before facing the current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem.
