My name is Manny Batac and my crusade is all about the responsible utilization of mass media (including advertising) for the greater benefit of the viewing public.
My special interests and concerns are those about positive portrayals of persons with disabilities and senior citizens and those that will greatly affect young viewers.
I am a former Radio Commentator of DWAN-AM Radio. And I’m suffering a family of hereditary (genetic) diseases called Progressive muscular dystrophy (LIMB-GIRDLE Type), an illness that gradually weakens the muscles of the human body. My disease began to manifest during my adult life and it’s one that even modern medicine at the turn of the millennium has yet to discover a cure for. My illness is still going its destructive way, but it hasn’t stopped me to continue my advocacy. As the so called “Crusader on Wheelchair” my advocacy will continue as my personal crusade. It maybe a lonely cause but it is worth the fight.
Here is my letter of concern to HON. MA. CONSOLIZA P. LAGUARDIA of the DSWD (Department
of Social Welfare and Development):
June 22, 2010
HON. MA. CONSOLIZA P. LAGUARDIA
Chairperson
Movie & Television Review & Classification Board
MTRCB Building
No. 18 Timog Avenue, Quezon City
Dear Chairperson Laguardia:
Thank you for your letter addressed to the good Acting Secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Hon. Celia Capadocia-Yangco assuring her of the MTRCB’s concern on the television program “Face to Face” currently and continuously being aired over ABC Channel 5.
However, with all due respect I will have a better appreciation of your concern if your promises to the good secretary are also true in actions. It appears to me that the series of dialogue you made with the show’s executives and hosts were not effective due to the fact that the use of violence and abusive languages are still evident once in a while in recent episodes of the subject program.
If the MTRCB is saying that it will continue to uphold good Filipino values as well as the State’s interest in protecting the welfare of children and see that they are safeguarded from abuses which might prevent their growth into free and independent well-developed men and citizens, I am one with you and therefore I strongly request that the Board re-examines its actions and level-up its interventions if necessary to sincerely effect much-needed and appropriate changes (and control) over the subject program the soonest possible time.
I look forward to a more responsible television programming under your administration.
Very truly yours,
Manuel “Manny” N. Batac
Crusader on Wheelchair
