A supertaster experiences the sense of taste with greater intensity than the average person. Women, Asians and Africans are more likely to be supertasters. Non-tasters taste things more blandly and the flavors are not as intense compared to supertasters.
In a recent study by the Penn State group, they took 87 participants and put them through a series of tests on saltiness perception and preference. The results showed that a third of the people tested turned out to be supertasters, 43 percent of the participants were “medium tasters,” and a quarter of the participants were “non-tasters.” The supertasters test craved saltier foods than the others.
Experts can’t pinpoint what makes some people supertasters. Taste sensitivity is believed to be genetic, and supertasters could have an increased number of fungiform papillae, the tiny bumps on your tongue, causing them to taste things more vibrantly than other people.
