Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy promotions, who promotes Floyd Mayweather Jr. and also co-promotes Manny Pacquiao with Bob Arum told República Deportiva a sports show on Spanish TV station Univision that the most anticipated boxing match in many years is close to being a reality. The first negotiations were halted over Floyd Mayweather’s insistence that Manny Pacquiao go against athletic commission testing and submit to Olympic USADA style drug testing instead which Mayweather preferred.
De La Hoya had this to say on the Univision sports show, here is the English translation by boxing writer John Chavez of Boxing Truth Radio:
“Up until now, it’s been a very difficult negotiation process for various reasons but right now we’re very close.”
“We’re very close in finalizing the contracts that were once very complicated. The two fighters now realize that this fight must be made. It has to be made because the boxing fans want to see it happen and right now it’s the biggest fight that can be made in the world.”
“It’s going to be a big, BIG fight!”
“I think right now we are very, very close in finalizing the contracts. I can’t talk right now in detail about the negotiations but I will say that we are very close.”
If the fight does get made, then both fighters must have realized how important this fight is for boxing and how much money they can earn. It is rumored that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao could possibly net individual fight purses of $40 million dollars or more depending on the pay-per-view buys the fight generates.
