Probably one of the longest team rivalries in all of professional sports is the Los Angeles Lakers vs. the Boston Celtics, the two teams with the most NBA championships, and with a long standing West coast versus East coast feud. Starting with the Celtics Bill Russell and Bob Cousy vs. the Lakers Elgin Baylor and Jerry West and each time they faced each other in the finals the Celtics prevailed over the Lakers.
This will be the 12th meeting between the Lakers and the Celtics in the NBA Finals. The Lakers and the Celtics have faced each other in the NBA finals a total of 11 times and the Celtics winning 9 times and the Lakers only winning twice, last losing in 2008 to the Celtics.
People remember the Magic Johnson (Lakers) vs. Larry Bird (Celtics) era rivalry and the many intense exciting games they played. During the 80’s the Lakers and the Celtics faced each other 3 times in the NBA Finals and with the Celtics winning in 1984 and the Lakers beating the Celtics in 1985 and 1987.
The Celtics beat the Lakers in their last Finals match up in 2008 winning 4-2 over the Lakers, the following season the Lakers went on to win the 2009 NBA championships 4-1 over the Orlando Magic and now in 2010 both teams will meet again can Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Ron Artest, Derek Fisher defeat Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo this time around?
