Rue McClanahan star of the hit TV series “The Golden Girls” died after her son Mark Bish decided to take her off life support. On Monday June 2, 2010 Rue McClanahan suffered a massive brain aneurysm at her New York apartment and was rushed to New York Presbyterian hospital where she remained under life support.
McClanahan was a breast cancer survive who had undergone treatment for breast cancer in 1997 and would lecture other breast cancer survivors on how to age gracefully. In 2009, she had heart bypass surgery and was slowly recovering.
She was best known for her role as Blanche Devereaux in the 1980’s hit show “The Golden Girls” which also starred Bea Arthur, Betty White, and Estelle Getty.
Rue’s husband Morrow Wilson who she separated from in 2009, said Rue had a living will that if she were ever declared brain dead they would pull the plug, but the doctors waited for her son Mark Bish to make the final decision. Morrow also stated that Rue didn’t want a funeral service when she died.
Betty White is the last living “Golden Girl” at age 88.
