Director Guillermo del Toro, of Hellboy fame, quit as director for the film version of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ” The Hobbit” a two-part prequel to Peter Jackson’s trilogy “Lord of the Rings.”
Guillermo expressed that it was the hardest decision of his life to leave the film without a director, but ongoing production delays, uncertainty of start dates, and not having the film green lit by MGM caused him to resign as director.
“After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures,” said del Toro.
Peter Jackson who was helping with the movie and a producer for “The Hobbit”, told www.TheOneRing.net he understands Guillermo’s frustrations and believes del Toro wasn’t ready to fully commit to 6 years of filming in New Zealand when his original commitment was for 3 years. Jackson also said he will discuss new director replacements for “The Hobbit” with MGM studios.
Guillermo del Toro is not totally abandoning the project, he will still finish co-writing the screenplay and scripts with Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson and his wife, Fran Walsh.
