OFWs demonstrated at Levinski Park in Tel Aviv, Israel against possible deportation of undocumented migrants including their children.
Migrante-Middle East rights group coordinator John Leonard Monerona said even refugees and asylum seekers are not spared from this new crackdown.
“An overseas Filipino worker, who requested not to be named, told me that since July 2009, the Israeli government through its Interior Ministry office has initiated a crackdown on undocumented migrant workers, including refugees and asylum seekers, in some of the most depressed areas in Israel such as north of Hadera and southern part of Gedera,” said Migrante regional coordinator John Leonard Monterona who is based out of Saudi Arabia.
The Israeli government reversed its 2006 policy that granted citizenship or legal status to hundreds of children born to undocumented migrant worker parents, who have since have had their stay in the Israel legitimized.
“With such reversal of policy, many undocumented migrant workers will be repatriated including their own children and even their entire families; there are an estimated 2,000 undocumented OFWs in Israel,” Migrante said.
The Migrant rights group said the Philippine embassy in Israel and the new Aquino administration should get involved by addressing the OFW issues in Israel.
