One day I went to the local drugstore to purchase some personal necessities and when I went to the cashier, I took out my debit card and handed it to her, then she told me it didn’t go through, so she said let me try it again and she said something is wrong the card is declined.
So I left the store embarrassed. I went home frantically and immediately checked my bank account on the internet and to my surprise I saw 6 different charges that I was not familiar with. So I called the bank the same day at nighttime, of course the bank is closed but I was persistent and got a hold of the fraud department.
I was shocked because I never lost my debit card before, and I asked them how could they get my information and go into my account if they don’t have my card. The fraud department lady told me maybe you had an extra card around and you accidentally lost in store or outside, I told them I never had a duplicate.
So they closed my account and told me I would be getting a new account and card soon. The next morning I went to the bank looking for some answers to rest my worried mind, but the bank wasn’t helpful at all, I left with no answers and all they gave me was papers to fill out so I can retrieve my money. In the meantime my bank account is frozen and I cannot use it.
So still worried and without answers, I went home and did some research of my own online on debit card fraud, and I discovered something called “Debit Card Cloning”, where a teller can copy your card on their own personal card reader and record your info and transfer it immediately onto a blank card, from there they can make purchases immediately and whats so scary is that it’s almost difficult to trace them unless you keep track of your purchases and always check online.
So what happen to me was a teller copied my card and cloned it with one of their devices, and was able to use my account without my knowledge or my debit card. You can’t trust anyone now and you always need to be cautious and not naive like myself. Knowledge is power and make sure that this doesn’t happen to you.
Here is the link of the article I found by ABC news and the video below on Credit/Debit card cloning
Don’t fall victim to debit card cloning like I did, do your research because as evidenced in my situation the bank doesn’t always help, always keep track of your purchases, check your online account and be weary of people who handle your debit card, anyone from the waitress to the cashier can steal your debit card info and clone it.
