Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, 31, is in one of the toughest fights of his life, but this fight is not inside a boxing ring it’s in the political ring against political candidate, Roy Chiongbian, who is also running for the same Sarangani congressional seat.
Roy Chiongbian is 61, 30-years older than Pacquiao, and he comes from a wealthy family with a power political background in Sarangani province. His father authored the 1992 law that created Sarangani province and was Sarangani’s very first congressman and his mother served as governor. Roy’s nephew is the current vice governor and Roy wants to succeed his older brother, Erwin, who is leaving the seat after 9-years because of term limit restrictions.
Pacquiao had a similar battle in politics when he first ran in the May 2007 legislative elections for a seat in the House of Representatives. Pacquiao ran as a candidate of the Liberal Party, hoping to represent the 1st District of South Cotabato in his home of General Santos, Philippines. Pacquiao lost the election to incumbent Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio.
Pacquiao ‘s intention in running for politics is to help the poor people, but many of the people of the Philippines didn’t vote him into office before because they felt he did more for the Philippines as a boxer than a politician. He currently leads in the polls.
