A Filipino Canadian boy, has won a lawsuit against a Montreal School for racial discrimination. The Quebec Human Rights Tribunal awarded the boy, Luc Joachim, damages in the amount of 17,000 Canadian dollars for being the victim of “racial and ethnic discrimination”.
The incident occurred in 2006 when Luc was 7 years old, a teacher admonished the boy for eating his lunch with a spoon and fork instead of the “Canadian way” of a fork only.
When the boy explained that this was how Filipinos eat, the teacher reportedly said that it was “disgusting” and made disparaging remarks about Filipinos in general.
The boy was then forced to finish eating in a corner. The school’s principal backed the actions of the teacher, and also added racially insensitive remarks, which prompted the boy’s mother, Maria Theresa Gallardo-Cagadoc, to file a formal compliant.
