Scientists have discovered a new species of monitor lizard in the Philippines. First spotted in the Sierra Madre mountains in 2004, it was only discovered to be a new species after extensive DNA testing was completed last year. Scientists have named the new species Varanus bitatawa. Measuring at over 6.5 feet long, it is one of the largest lizard species ever found. The lizard has a striking appearance of golden spots on dark skin.
