Bananas were never a popular fruit in Japan, especially in the warm summer months when they don't stay as fresh.  But this past summer a new diet craze has increased demand and created a major shortage of bananas in the country.  Its called "The Morning Banana Diet", and simply consists of eating only bananas and water for breakfast, followed by a regular lunch and dinner.  People on the diet claim to have lost 30 or more pounds in as little as six weeks. Nutritionist's have questioned the diet effectiveness, but the general public has eaten the diet up.  Japan's number one banana importer, Dole, which imports the majority of bananas from the Philippines, has had to look to other countries to meet the increased demand.  Like most fads diets, it will probably fizzle out in a couple of months, when "The Morning Banana Diet" followers don't see the results they expected. In the meantime enjoy your bananas while you can.
